Constantia Flexibles Leads at Alufoil Awards
Constantia Flexibles, a global corporation that develops, manufactures and supplies flexible packaging solutions for the pharmaceutical, healthcare, food and beverage markets, received more honors than any other entrant in the European Aluminium Foil Association’s prestigious Alufoil Trophy Awards. Of the contest’s five categories, Constantia Flexibles was recognized in four – the only company to receive that number of accolades.
The European Aluminium Foil Association represents more than 100 companies utilizing alufoil in their products, including rolling and rewinding, container manufacturing and other types of flexible packaging development. Its Alufoil Trophy Awards showcase excellence in products that either are made from alufoil or contain alufoil as part of a laminate or structure.
The Alufoil Trophy Awards’ five categories address nearly every market for packaging and other technical uses. Winners in each category are grouped rather than ranked; a total of 11 entries were recognized across these categories. Judges also have discretion to extend an Alufoil Trophy to products displaying excellence across a number of categories, or for a particularly novel or clever application. Constantia Flexibles’ “Feinschmecker-pouch,” which was developed for German food and beverage brand Knorr, was honored in this fashion.
Winning entries from Constantia Flexibles included:
• In the Marketing & Design category, Constantia Flexibles was recognized for Cafétique, a striking new single-serve (30 ml) capsule containing a range of coffee liqueurs. The capsules are housed in a presentation box to reinforce a luxury image, and are sealed with alufoil lids printed with high-quality graphics. It is believed to be the first convenience coffee product to offer an alcoholic content.
• In the Product Preservation category, Constantia Flexibles was honored for HiPer Wrap, a new flow pack material offering an alternative to film-based flow wrap for the confectionary sector. HiPer Wrap offers improved barrier functionality, and is capable of operating on high-speed lines at production rates up to 400 units per minute.
• In the Resource Efficiency category, Constantia Flexibles was recognized for its Die Cut Lid 2020, a proprietary co-extrusion coated lid composed of a thin aluminum layer measuring only 20 microns – the first such product to utilize so thin a foil. Die Cut Lid 2020 is sealable against PP-cups and is available embossed or non-embossed.
• In the Technical Innovation category, Constantia Flexibles earned an award for its Philly Brick Foil on behalf of Kraft’s Philadelphia Classico/Light spread. Shaped into a rectangle using special equipment, the packaging is hot-sealed both lengthwise and crosswise upon being filled, with the sealing strips folded against the reverse side. The packaging is completely sealed so that the aluminum foil’s barrier properties are fully realized.
• In the special Discretionary Awards category, Constantia Flexibles was recognized for its Feinschmecker-pouch on behalf of German food and beverage brand Knorr. The package holds the distinction as the first peelable, bottom-gusseted pouch – an entirely new format for dry food applications. The combination of two flaps and an easy peel process affords consumers hassle-free opening without the need for tools such as scissors.
