Innovative aluminium conveyor rollers designed and built by Horizon Conveyor Equipment are offering light relief to site operators in their efforts to tackle health and safety risks and cut maintenance downtime. Horizon has constructed its heavy duty aluminium rollers to offer robust strength but at nearly half the weight of their standard steel counterparts, making them an increasingly appealing alternative on a wide range of sites. Development work on the rollers began in response to industry concerns about the health and safety risks of using standard heavy steel trough and return rollers, which often weigh up to 90kg. Excessive weight means that steel rollers generally need extra manpower to carry, install and maintain, and conveyors often require prolonged periods of downtime while...

Well here it is. The F-Type R Coupe, a car Jaguar promises is its most badass yet, has been unveiled at the LA Motor Show. Actually “performance focused” is the official language used, but with 550bhp in a relatively compact all-aluminium body and some nifty new brake-steer technology, who are they kidding? Simultaneously, Jaguar has been going a little Miley recently, urging us to tweet that #itsgoodtobebad and generally wanting to be regarded as the industry’s transgressive. As if. What is shocking about the F-Coupe, however, is that it is even more expensive than the convertible; the fastest one, the one with that supercharged V8, is £85,000. Now you will find a lot of people with a lot of nice things to say about the Jaguar F-Type, but you won’t find anyone who will tell you it’s too...

In 1948, Land Rover built its first Defender vehicle with a body made not from steel, which was scarce and expensive after the second world war, but of aluminium. Sixty-five years later, Jaguar Land Rover’s cutting-edge new Range Rover model is built from the same metal, but for different reasons. “Lightweighting” is one of the car industry’s most important areas of innovation, as manufacturers fight to make vehicles more efficient and less polluting, and aluminium is about 40 per cent lighter than conventional steel. As some engineering teams vie to squeeze more output from smaller engines, others are working to make vehicle parts lighter. The spur is provided by government regulations requiring cars to use less energy. “Lightweighting is critical to ensuring fuel efficiency,” says Anil...
