Novelis hits out at rising premiums for aluminium

The world’s largest buyer of aluminium, Novelis, has hit out at rising prices for the metal, saying that record premiums payable are “indefensible” and give “the appearance of an engineered squeeze” in the North American market. US Midwest premiums – the amount payable on top of the official exchange price for immediate delivery of aluminium – rose to 20-21 cents a pound last week, according to the consultancy CRU. That translates to about $450 a tonne, or more than a quarter of the London Metal Exchange (LME) cash price of $1,726 a tonne. European and Japanese premiums have also risen to new highs, which is good news for producers and traders stockpiling metal, and suggests a tight market. But Novelis, which makes rolled aluminium sheets for use in car bodies and beverage cans, said the...

Ford is offering dealers the rebate so "they can be aluminum-capable before the vehicle launches," Massie said. Ford has said the 2015 F-150 will launch in the fourth quarter this year. Ford is showing the pickup to dealers at the convention after unveiling it to much fanfare two weeks ago at the Detroit auto show. Chevrolet can gain U.S. share in the pickup market : GM executives

General Motors executives say Chevrolet can take market share from Ford in the pickup market despite the planned introduction late this year of a redesigned F-150. Dealers who attended Chevy’s make meeting here on Sunday said GM executives believe Ford’s heavy use of aluminum could raise the cost of ownership of the redesigned Ford truck -- an area in which they believe the Chevy Silverado already has an advantage. GM officials at the meeting “said that they think the use of aluminum on the new Ford truck could increase insurance costs and the overall cost of ownership,” said one dealer who attended and didn’t want his name used. “They said it’s our opportunity to take share away from Ford.” GM executives at the meeting included Alan Batey, president of GM North America and head of Chevy...

India considers anti-dumping duty on Korean, Chinese & Thai alloy wheels

Indian Government is considering anti-dumping duty on some types of aluminium alloy wheels imported from Thailand, Korea and China to protect domestic manufacturers from cheaper imports. In its initial findings, the Directorate General of Anti-dumping and Allied Duties (DGAD) has recommended import duty ranging from USD 1.18 to USD 2.15 per kg on cast aluminium alloy wheels from the above three countries, the Commerce Ministry said in a notice. The notice suggests import duties for alloy wheels with a dimension of 12 to 24 inches. While the Commerce Ministry recommends the restrictive duty, it is the Finance Ministry which will impose it. The Directorate has found the alloy wheels imported from these countries are much below its normal value and felt the need of imposing dumping duties on...
