U.S. drinks can maker Ball Corp agreed to buy British rival Rexam Plc in a sweetened 4.43 billion pounds ($6.9 billion) deal, creating an industry giant that can better manage capital spending and costs as aluminium premiums rise. The cash-and-stock deal would merge the world's two largest beverage can makers by volume into a combined entity that could serve as a single supplier to customers across diverse markets. It would also reduce warehousing and transport costs for the can makers, which are contending with record-high premiums, the surcharge they must pay to traders on top of cash metal prices to obtain aluminium. Shares of Rexam, which makes cans for Coca-Cola Co and Anheuser-Busch InBev SA, rose more than 6 percent to 571.5 pence in early trading before falling back, and were...

The Aluminium Federation (ALFED), the body that represents the UK aluminium sector, has welcomed Open Energi as a member. UK company Open Energi, which has offices in London and Manchester, has developed an energy demand response management product, which enables heavy electricity users, including many in the metals sector, to match use to availability. In addition to delivering new revenues to users, demand response management promises to lower the UK’s risk of blackouts, at the same time as reducing the overall cost of energy. It achieves this by avoiding the need to build new power capacity, making it easier to manage intermittent renewable energy supplies, and enabling significant emissions reductions. “Open Energi’s technology automatically responds to fluctuations in demand within...

Novelis says that margins in the beverage can industry, which was their core area of focus, has started to fall rapidly and as a result they are planning a systematic focus-shift to automobile aluminium. “(Our new business) model suggests that by FY20 (fiscal 2020), 25% of our shipments would be automotive. The beginning of this evolution is evidenced by record third-quarter shipments, which will only continue to accelerate from this point forward,” said Philip Martens, president and chief executive officer of Novelis. Steve Fisher, chief financial officer, Novelis says, “There are clearly signs that the market demand (for beverage cans) is continuing to go down, and it’s a little bit quicker than we thought. This is having some trade-offs between pricing and capacity.” Novelis plans to...
