Europe holds 10% of global aluminium extrusion demand, supported by Germany’s Constellium, France’s Hydro Extrusions & Italy’s Metra

Across Europe, aluminium extrusion has become closely woven into some of the region’s biggest industrial and construction markets. From automotive and transport to buildings and industrial applications, extruded profiles are finding demand across a wide range of sectors. This is reflected in Europe’s position in the global market: the region accounted for 12 per cent of global aluminium extrusion capacity, making it the second-largest regional contributor after China. At the same time, Europe represented 10 per cent of global aluminium extrusion usage, out of total global usage of 35.35 million tonnes . With production capacity and usage shares relatively close, Europe’s extrusion capacity and consumption are broadly at par. If we break down Europe’s 10 per cent share of global aluminium...

Jalousie shutters from the Dominican Republic to fall under US trade orders against Chinese aluminium extrusion

A press release from the Aluminum Extruders Council confirms that the U. S. Department of Commerce has ruled that jalousie shutters exported from the Dominican Republic fall under the scope of the Aluminum Extruders Council trade orders against the Chinese aluminium extrusion industry. This is a key decision for the U.S. aluminium industry because these shutters are made from window frame aluminium extrusions imported from China. Jalousie shutters are glass-less louver windows composed of parallel aluminium slats set in a frame, which are joined on an aluminium track. The shutters tilt open and shut together to control airflow. The Ruling document from Department of Commerce stated, “…we also find that record evidence establishes that China is the country of origin, and that the further...

Nemak reports 16.4% YoY drop in revenue in 3Q19 on lower aluminium price; sales volume down 14%

The company’s revenue was down 16.4% YoY to US$963 million in 3Q19, mainly due to lower shipments and aluminium prices. Total sales volume decreased by 13.8% year-on-year to 10.6 million equivalent units during 3Q19. This was due to a less favourable product mix in North America and softer customer production in China. Nemak manufactures aluminium components for powertrain and body structure applications. It generated revenue of US$4.7 billion in 2018. EBITDA came in at US$139 million, a drop of 13.1% YoY. “This variation followed a lower volume, unfavourable exchange rate effects, and non-recurring expenses...

Russia’s aluminium wire export to grow 18% in 2019; Belarus to be the highest importer

High cost saving is one of the factors that has been increasingly bolstering the shift from using copper wire to aluminium wire and therefore, the demand for the latter. Considering a transformation cost of US$1,5 per kg for copper and US$ 5 per kg for aluminium, the final cost for the user will be almost similar, but the weight of aluminium is 1/3 of copper. And even considering 10% more consumption of aluminium, saving is approximately 60% of the cost of the coil. {newsStudioGallery} Aluminium wires are widely used in various home electrical appliances, switches, circuit breakers and motors. Beside cost saving and light-weight properties, aluminium wires are corrosion resistant. So, backed on the increasing demand, the exports and imports of aluminium wire have also been found growing...

Aluminium plates, sheets and strips import by Saudi Arabia to decline in 2019 after three years of growth

The global export-import data shows that after a year-on-year rise in Saudi Arabia’s aluminium plates, sheets and strips import last year, the country this year is likely to see a drop of 16 per cent to 89,966 tonnes. In 2018, Saudi Arabia's import was approximately at 106,936 tonnes, up 29 per cent from 83,053 tonnes in 2017. In 2016, the import amount was at around 59,353 tonnes, which indicates that the import volume had recorded a rise in 2017 as well, by about 40 per cent. As far as the import cost is concerned, Saudi Arabia’s aluminium plates, sheets and strips import is estimated to be valued lower than the previous year, in tandem with the drop in import volume. Compared with US$491 million in 2018, the country’s import cost this year is likely to come in at US$ 317 million, down...

NASA’s MSFC becomes the first customer of HRL's 7A77 aluminium 3D printing powder

HRL Laboratories research center sold its first order of 7A77 aluminium 3D printing powder to NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) in Huntsville, Alabama. The material was sold by HRL Additive, a newly established 3D printing entity from HRL Laboratories just one week after the commercial launch of the product. The company would supply the aluminium powder to the aerospace and automotive sectors. MSFC aims to explore the potential of 3D printing large-scale aerospace components using 7A77 powder. “Certainly, the 7A77 feedstock powder could unlock the production of large-scale components produced via fusion-based additive manufacturing,” explained Omar Rodriguez of NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center. HRL Laboratories is jointly owned by General Motors, and the Boeing aerospace...
