
According to the preliminary estimates of Aluminum Association, aluminium demand in the United States and Canada, including shipments by domestic producers plus imports, stood at an estimated 4.3 million tonnes through April of 2019, a slight increase from YTD 2018. Through the first four months of 2019, apparent consumption (demand less exports) in domestic markets stood at an estimated 3.8 million tonnes, up 1.8 per cent YoY. Apparent consumption in domestic U.S. and Canadian markets totalled 965,244 tonnes in April, rising 2.9 per cent over April 2018.

Demand for semi-finished products totalled 3.1 million tonnes through April 2019, up 2.6 per cent. Demand for aluminium semi-finished products in the U.S. and Canada totalled an estimated 801,951 tonnes in April, up 3.6 per cent over April 2018.
Shipments of aluminium sheet and plate totalled 452,232 tonnes, an increase of 6.8 per cent YoY. Extruded product shipments declined 1.4 per cent year-over-year to 229,971 tonnes. Estimated shipments of aluminium ingot for castings, exports and other uses totalled 276,691 tonnes in April, off 8.6 per cent from a year ago.
Exports of aluminium ingot and mill products from the U.S. and Canada (excluding cross-border trade) totalled 472,189 tonnes through April 2019, down 9.2 per cent from YTD 2018. Imports were off 7.6 per cent to 1.3 million tonnes.
Producer inventories totalled 1.63 million tonnes in April, an increase of 2.9 per cent from the March 2019 revised level of 1.59 million tonnes. Producer inventories were up 13.1 per cent YoY.
