
The production of aluminium flat rolled products in Japan is on the rise. As per December 2016 data released by the Japan Aluminium Association, the total FRP output in the country was estimated at 1,249.9 thousand tonnes last year. In January 2017, FRP production reached 91.8 thousand tonnes, rising 2.5 per cent from 89.6 thousand tonnes in the same period previous year. The export data of aluminium plates, sheets and strips from the country also reveals an increasing trend.

{alcircleadd}Japan exported 253268.77 tonnes of aluminium plates, sheets and strips in 2016, up 2.17 per cent from 247881.9 tonnes in 2015. In 2017, the country is estimated to ship 254572.84 tonnes of these value-added products to off-shore customers, higher by 0.51 per cent from that in the previous year.

Revenues from export of aluminium plates, sheets and strips have also risen year-on-year since 2015. Japan's earnings from aluminium plates, sheets and strips export in 2015 totalled US$1.07 billion which increased by 20.5 per cent to reach US$1.29 billion in 2016. In 2017, total value of aluminium plates, sheets and strips export from Japan is estimated to reach US$1.38 million, up .9 per cent YoY.

In 2016, the top destinations of Japan's aluminium plates, sheets and strips exports were China (58292.47 tonnes), Australia (13155.6 tonnes), USA (24016.55 tonnes) and Saudi Arabia (3015.96 tonnes).

However, the month-on-month export data published by the Japan Aluminium Association shows, the country's total aluminium plates, sheets and strips export in January 2017 has dipped 16.2 per cent from the corresponding period previous year. The export totalled 13.8 thousand tonnes in January, down from 16.4 thousand tonnes in January 2016.
