China to build US$1 billion alumina refinery in Indonesia
To pave the mega investment, domestic company PT Harita Jayaraya teams up with China Hongqiao Group Ltd. to form a joint venture (JV), namely PT Well Harvest Winning Alumina Refinery.
Harita Group’s CEO Lim Gunawan Hariyanto said about 70% of PT Well Harvest Winning Alumina Refinery is the portion of China Hongqiao Group Ltd., whereas Harita Jayaraya is only 30% stake.
The formation of this joint venture company is done because it could not provide the bauxite processing technology yet.
"Therefore, we first partnered with them," he said after meeting with the Minister of Industry MS Hidayat, Thursday (7/4).
He added, there will be groundbreaking to begin construction of the processing plant and alumina refining on July 17, 2013.
The plant plans to reach production capacity of 2 million tons per year. In the early stages, investment which will be spent is approximately US$500 million, used for a capacity of 1 million tons per year.
"In mid-2015, the factory phase I is targeted to produce. Running smoothly and continuously supported by the Ministry of Industry, quickly we can even invest another US$500 million to 1 million tons per year again in the second stage. "
According to him, the refinery will be built in Ketapang District, West Kalimantan. So far, the province is known as the region that contains enormous bauxite.
To produce about 2 million tons of alumina per year, this plant requires about 6 million tons of bauxite per year.
Meanwhile, to optimize refinery’s performance, it requires manpower to 2,000 people.
