Since 2005 China alumina import volume has decreased gradually, as well as the ratio of total alumina supply volume. 2009 and 2012 were two special years, affected by financial crisis in 2009, China alumina output showed negative growth for first time in 10 years. Also owing to difference in domestic and overseas alumina price, the alumina import volume increased 12% yoy in 2009.

In 2012, affected by export restriction on bauxite in Indonesia, Chinese electrolytic aluminium enterprises imported a large number of alumina out of worry about alumina shortage, the import volume increasing to 167% yoy.
