Cans for Christmas raises $2,500

A recycling-for-gifts event raised about $2,500 to help buy Christmas gifts for Smyth County children this year.
"Cans for Christmas" at Berry Iron and Metal Company was an event that encouraged customers to bring in aluminum cans to recycle at 55 cents per pound. Berry's matched the day's payout to help buy Christmas presents for needy children who have not been 'adopted' through programs or by individuals this year.
A total of 1,631 aluminum cans brought nearly $900 in donations, according to a written statement. Cash donations from employees and donors helped boost the funds to buy gifts.
