
Canada imported $399 billion worth of goods in 2016. China is the second largest exporter of goods to the country. Canada imported 253 tonnes of alumina from China during the first eight months of this year. The top alumina exporting countries to Canada are Brazil, Australia, and Jamaica in 2016.

{alcircleadd}Canada imports substantial amount of alumina to feed its domestic smelter. Rio Tinto owned Vaudreuil refinery produces 1.5 million tonnes of alumina and specialty products per annum.

As our data shows, Canada imported about 2.65 million tonnes of alumina in H1 2017, compared with 2.34 million tonnes in the corresponding period previous year. It is estimated that Canada will import a total volume of 2.92 million tonnes of alumina in H2 2017, compared with 2.29 million tonnes of alumina in H2 2016.
The cost of alumina import stood at USD 848 million in H1 2017, from USD 562 million in H1 2016. The cost of import for alumina is estimated to be USD 877 million in H2 2017, from USD 581 million in the corresponding period previous year.
