EDITED BY : MAYURAKSHI GANGULY 2MINS READ

In a strive to make its production chain sustainable, BMW Brilliance recently took a significant step by signing memorandums of understanding (MoUs) with Henan Shenhuo Group Co., Ltd. and Shuaiyichi New Materials Group Co., Ltd. These memorandums emphasise the importance of green electrolytic aluminium and recycled aluminium, which have significant energy-saving and emission-reduction advantages compared to traditional aluminium.

With this partnership, BMW will be able to meet its demand for high-quality, low-carbon aluminium in production while also reducing the carbon footprint of car production from the source. Seeing leading companies take concrete steps towards a more sustainable future is quite inspiring.

Under the MOUs signed with Shenhuo Group and Shuaiyichi Group, both companies have committed to reserving high-quality aluminium materials for BMW Brilliance and its supply chain every year. The aluminium produced by Shenhuo Group is green electrolytic aluminium that meets BMW's quality standards and is manufactured using low-carbon renewable energy, resulting in a reduction of approximately 14 tonnes of carbon emissions per tonne of aluminium.

Similarly, the aluminium reserved by Shuaiyichi Group is of high quality and recycled, which can reduce carbon emissions by almost 18 tonnes per tonne of aluminium, thereby significantly reducing the carbon footprint of BMW products throughout their entire lifecycle. These MOUs are a vital step towards BMW's low-carbon transition for body parts and raw materials.

The international transportation sector amounted for 27% of the total 93.5 million global aluminium usage in 2021, resulting in 25.5 million tonnes, while in 2022, the projected growth was 26.7 million, up 4.7% year-on-year.
