Both LME and SHFE registered a drop on Monday after a week of rise; rising greenback will keep prices rangebound today

The US dollar inched up on Monday as investors tempered expectations for an aggressive Federal Reserve interest rate cut later this month. LME base metals, closed lower on Monday. Aluminium tumbled 1.8% and SHFE aluminium shed 0.6%.

Three-month LME aluminium slipped 1.81% to close at US$1,813.5 per tonne on Monday. The load-up of short positions primarily accounted for the losses. LME aluminium is expected to trade between US$1,800-1,840 per tonne today.

As on July 22, Monday, LME aluminium cash (bid) price stood at US$ 1807.50 per tonne, LME official settlement price stands at US$ 1808 per tonne; 3-months bid price stands at US$ 1835 per tonne, 3-months offer price is US$ 1836 per tonne; Dec 20 bid price stands at US$ 1938 per tonne, and Dec 20 offer price stands at US$ 1943 per tonne.

The LME aluminium opening stock registered dropped yesterday to 966600 tonnes. Live Warrants totalled at 692450 tonnes, and Cancelled Warrants were 274150 tonnes.

LME aluminium 3-months Asian Reference Price is hovering at US$ 1844 per tonne.

SME and SHFE Aluminium Price Trend

The benchmark aluminium price on Shanghai Metal Exchange (SME) dropped to US$ 2008 per tonne today from US$ 2018 per tonne on Monday.

The most-traded SHFE September contract rebounded to around the 20-day moving average at noon, but loaded-up shorts and exiting longs capped its increase at RMB 13,890 per tonne, settling it 0.47% lower on the day at RMB 13,860 per tonne. With the longs trimming their positions, the SHFE September contract fell below all short-term moving averages to a low of RMB 13,805 per tonne overnight. The contract traded rangebound in the rest of trading hours and ended 0.61% lower at RMB 13,825 per tonne. A rally in the US dollar and bearish fundamentals weighed on SHFE aluminium overnight, which fell for a second straight day. It is expected to trade between RMB 13,760-13,860 per tonne today, with spot prices in a discount of RMB 30 per tonne to a premium of RMB 10 per tonne.
