On 1st October 2021, the coup leader of Guinea Mamadi Doumbouya was sworn in as interim President of the West African nation. This will adjudicate the expectation of the regional power towards a short time transition to constitutional rule following the Sept 5th dethroning of President Alpha Conde.
The interim Presidential swearing-in ceremony was held at the Mohamed V Palace at Guinea’s capital Conakry with the noticeable absenteeism of most West African country heads, who consented last month to impose sanctions on coup members and their relatives.
Since the previous year, West and Central Africa have witnessed four coups. However, the political turbulence has escalated disquiet and took the side towards military rule in the Kingdom of minerals but the poorest nation in the world.
Doumbouya took the oath of the office by wearing a military uniform, a red beret and wraparound sunglasses and hand covered with white-glove.
The interim president said in his speech: "I fully appreciate the magnitude and immensity of the responsibilities entrusted to me.”
He also committed to moderate a transition that would incorporate the drafting of a new constitution, fighting corruption, electoral reform and the organisation of free and transparent elections.
The revolutionary seizure of power group commented that its members will be obstructed from standing in the next elections, but there has been no clear indication of the time frame. Though it was said this will resolute by an 81-member Transitional National Council.
Although, the fear of political turmoil to hamstring the bauxite and other minerals production and export was predicted, but the largest foreign operators in the country declared that there has been no such instances.
The new president promised to “respect all the national and international commitments to which the country has subscribed."
