Average A00 aluminium ingot prices on the rise on growing demand and high input cost

At Asia Metals Seminar, jointly organised by Shanghai Metal Market, Bloomberg and HKEX on Tuesday, May 15, 2018, Ian Roper, general manager of SMM Singapore was of opinion that SHFE aluminium prices would likely to remain on the cost curve this year, while alumina prices would be dependable on the recommencement of Hydro’s Alunorte refinery. This year until May, China has exported around 300,000 tonnes of alumina, according to SMM.

On Wednesday, May 16, analyst of Macquarie Bank Lynn Zhao shared her aluminium market forecast at the seminar saying that global aluminium market might undergo a deficit in 2021 and 2022 but the surplus will come from China’s continuous build-up of capacity. Added to this, she also opined that winter cuts in China this year are going to leave some impact on the overall country’s aluminium supply.

However, with stable cost support for aluminium prices on account of high alumina, bauxite and energy prices, Zhao expects cost to come down in the longer term.

According to SMM, the average A00 aluminium ingot price is currently hovering at RMB 14740 per tonne, as on May 17, 2018, slightly higher than the previous day when the price was seen at RMB 14640 per tonne on May 16, 2018. The prices are expected to range between RMB 14720 per tonne and RMB 14760 per tonne, with spot discounts to settle at RMB 100 to RMB 60 per tonne.

The average alumina spot price, on the other hand, is seen at RMB 3118 per tonne since 3rd of May, 2018 until 17th of May, 2018. Major markets in China are also not witnessing any fluctuation in the alumina spot prices. While in East, the price is standing at RMB 3160 per tonne since the end of previous month; in Central, North and South, the prices are heard at RMB 3120 per tonne and RMB 3090 per tonne respectively from the beginning of the month.

The raw materials prices such as bauxite, alloys, pre-baked anode, and aluminium fluoride also show a steady price range, currently seen at RMB 430 per tonne, RMB 15900 per tonne, RMB 3425 per tonne, and RMB 10000 per tonne respectively.
