According to the International Aluminium Institute, alumina production in Europe (incl. Russia) improved during May 2023 for an alternate month, reaching 560,000 tonnes. Compared to a month ago, the output in May grew by 55,000 tonnes or 10.89 per cent from 505,000 tonnes, following a sequential plunge of 9.34 per cent from 557,000 tonnes in March. According to the International Aluminium Institute, primary aluminium production in Russia & Eastern Europe stood at 340,000 tonnes during May 2023 compared to 329,000 tonnes in April. Thus, on a month-on-month calculation, Russia & Eastern Europe’s primary aluminium output recorded an increase of 11,000 tonnes or 3.34 per cent, following a sequential fall of 4.08 per cent or 14,000 tonnes in April from 343,000 tonnes. The National Board of Revenue (NBR), Bangladesh's apex authority for tax administration, has reportedly exempted the 7.5 per cent value-added tax (VAT) on local aluminium scraps and wastes procured by utensil-manufacturing companies. The news came after NBR issued a public notice informing the VAT exemption effective from Monday, June 26. Officials said 7.5 per cent VAT on local wastes and scraps was imposed in 2012 as per the VAT and Supplementary Duty (SD) Act.
