
According to the International Aluminium Institute (IAI) data, primary aluminium production in Africa totalled 656,000 tonnes from January to May 2023. A year ago, the output was 667,000 tonnes, meaning primary aluminium production in the first five months of 2023 fell by 1.65 per cent Y-o-Y.

In May 2023, Africa’s primary aluminium output stood at 135,000 tonnes, reflecting an increase of 6,000 tonnes or 4.65 per cent month-on-month from 129,000 tonnes. But the production in April fell sequentially by 2,000 tonnes or 1.53 per cent from 131,000 tonnes in March, found IAI survey.
On a year-on-year basis, Africa’s primary aluminium output in May 2023 recorded a downfall of 4,000 tonnes or 2.88 per cent from 139,000 tonnes.
The average daily production of primary aluminium in Africa during May 2023 was 4,400 tonnes, up by 2.33 per cent from 4,300 tonnes in April’23 and down by 2.22 per cent from 4,500 tonnes in May 2022.
The world's primary aluminium production in May 2023 amounted to 5.851 million tonnes – 3.54 per cent more M-o-M than 5.651 million tonnes and 0.57 per cent higher Y-o-Y than 5.818 million tonnes. During January-May 2023, world primary aluminium output stood at 28.452 million tonnes versus 27.954 million tonnes during the corresponding period of the last year.
