World primary aluminium production shows a bullish trend Y-o-Y with a 1.8% growth during Jan-May’23

In May 2023, world primary aluminium production stood at 5.851 million tonnes compared to 5.651 million tonnes in April 2023 and 5.818 million tonnes in May 2022, showed the International Aluminium Institute survey. Thus, on a month-on-month calculation, world primary aluminium output in May reflected an increase of 3.54 per cent, and that on a year-on-year basis registered a growth of 0.57 per cent.

The world daily primary aluminium average production in May was recorded at 188,700 tonnes, slightly up from 188,400 tonnes in April and 1,000 tonnes or 0.53 per cent more than 187,700 tonnes in May 2022.

In the first five months of 2023, the global production of primary aluminium totalled 28.452 million tonnes, reflecting an increase of 1.78 per cent from 27.954 million tonnes.

In China, primary aluminium output during May’23 stood at 3.460 million tonnes after rising by 3.69 per cent month-on-month compared to 3.337 million tonnes. On a year-on-year basis, China’s production in May edged 0.46 per cent higher than 3.444 million tonnes, found IAI.

During January-May 2023, China produced 16.813 million tonnes of primary aluminium, up by per cent from 16.347 million tonnes during the corresponding period of the last year.

In the Gulf countries, primary aluminium production in May’23 amounted to 519,000 tonnes, reflecting a hike of 17,000 tonnes or 3.39 per cent month-on-month from 502,000 tonnes and an increase of 3,000 tonnes or 0.58 per cent year-on-year from 516,000 tonnes.

The Gulf countries’ total production in the first five months of 2023 was 2.531 million tonnes versus 2.511 million tonnes a year earlier.

In Asia (ex-China), primary aluminium production also grew month-on-month by 3.12 per cent during May’23 from 385,000 tonnes to 397,000 tonnes, learned IAI. On a year-on-year basis, the output stood 2.58 per cent higher than 387,000 tonnes. From January to May, Asia’s (ex-China) total production of primary aluminium was 1.929 million tonnes – 1.47 per cent more than 1.901 million tonnes during the same period of the last year.
