Rio Tinto to build hydrogen plant with Sumitomo for Yarwun alumina refinery aiming to curb carbon emissions
According to a report on Wednesday, July 12, Rio Tinto, an Anglo-Australian metals and mining group, will build a pilot hydrogen plant in Gladstone and retrofit an alumina refinery to replace natural gas use with clean hydrogen for the alumina refining process. It will be done with the help of Sumitomo Corporation, a leading Fortune 500 global trading and business investment company. On Monday, July 10, Azerbaijan announced to invest in the reconstruction of the Tajik Aluminium Company (TALCO) smelter in Tajikistan. This plan was mutually agreed between Azerbaijan and Tajikistan during the sixth session of the Joint Intergovernmental Commission on Trade and Economic Cooperation, held in Baku. US primary aluminium production in April 2023 dips 3% M-o-M, but daily output remains steady
According to the US Geological Survey, the United States domestic primary aluminium production in April 2023 stood at 63,000 tonnes, down by 2,000 tonnes or 3.08 per cent from 65,000 tonnes in March 2023. On a year-on-year calculation, the output plunged by 19,000 tonnes or 23.17 per cent from 82,000 tonnes. The United States' total production of primary aluminium in the first four months of 2023 amounted to 251,000 tonnes. The average daily production in April 2023 was 2,100 tonnes, almost restrained compared to 2,110 tonnes in the previous month and down by 640 tonnes or 23.36 per cent from 2,740 tonnes a year ago. Malaysia’s aluminium scrap imports from the US beat India hauling 38,500 tonnes in March 2023
In March 2023, the United States exported 38,500 tonnes of aluminium scrap to Malaysia compared to 31,000 tonnes in February, found the US Census Bureau data. Thus, on a month-on-month calculation, the aluminium scrap exports from the US to Malaysia registered an increase of 7,500 tonnes or 24.19 per cent, following a monthly restraint in February compared to 30,700 tonnes in January 2023. On a year-on-year basis, the US aluminium scrap exports to Malaysia soared by 1,341 per cent from 2,670 tonnes. In Q1 2023, the United States exported 100,000 tonnes of aluminium scrap in total to Malaysia, according to the USGS data. Aluminium smelters in Yunnan province, China, have begun increasing production as restrictions on power usage have been eased following a recovery in hydropower output, said an analyst to Reuters. Novelis, an independent US-based subsidiary of Hindalco Industries and a leading producer of aluminium, is expected to face pressure on margins for at least the next two to three quarters due to weaker demand in the building and construction sector, reduced aluminium can stocking, and lower aluminium prices, according to Kotak Institutional Equities. The United States aluminium plates, sheets and bars imports in March 2023 stood at 89,200 tonnes, bringing the total imports in the first quarter to 261,000 tonnes, found the US Census Bureau data. The quarterly import volume edged a fall of 25 per cent year-on-year from 348,000 tonnes. However, the monthly import in March rose by 16,300 tonnes or 22.36 per cent sequentially from 72,900 tonnes. The import grew back-to-back following an increase of 9,900 tonnes or 15.71 per cent from 63,000 tonnes.
