Aluminum Extruders Council applauds indictment of extrusion smugglers

The Aluminum Extruders Council on Tuesday commended the recent arrest and indictment of five people and three companies who conspired to smuggle Chinese aluminum extrusions into the US with the intent to fraud the country of around $26.7 million in antidumping and countervailing duties.

“It is extremely gratifying to see the US Department of Justice take action against those seeking to illegally bypass the import duties on Chinese aluminum extrusions,” Council President Rand Baldwin said in a statement.

“North American extruders have expended a great deal of effort and expense in their quest to establish a level playing field in the U.S. and Canadian extrusion markets,” Baldwin said. “Those efforts paid off when the Commerce Department ... imposed both antidumping and countervailing duties in 2010. Unfortunately, there are those who seek to circumvent those duties.”

The US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, a branch of the Department of Homeland Security, announced June 21 that it and the US Customs and Border Protection worked together to arrest the five people participating in fraudulent practices who were heads of following companies: Sultana Screens & Aluminum, Aluwest, PRP Trading, and AGI Trading.

The individuals “conspired to smuggle and clandestinely introduce aluminum imported from China by passing false and fraudulent invoices and documents through a CBP customhouse,” ICE said in a statement.
