Wang Huajun, Deputy Secretary-General of China Nonferrous Metals Industry Association, said in a telephone interview that there are indications that aluminum demand will improve in late 2Q and early 3Q.

Sources report that commercial banks began to offer loans for railway construction projects since the beginning of 2Q, thus easing the tightness of railway investment funds. Industry insiders said the investment in railways may slightly beyond the plan in 2012.

According to SMM statistics, aluminum consumption by the transportation sector accounts for about 25%, meaning domestic aluminum consumption may improve driven by railway investments.

Wang said that Chinese aluminum consumption is expected to improve in late 2Q and early 3Q, as the railway investment funds are gradually in place and construction of projects gradually resumes. Aluminum consumption in 2012 will continue to grow but at a slower pace from 2011. He added that the recently introduced planning of new energy vehicles will also help drive up aluminum demand.
