Key experts and top managers from Qatar University’s Material Technology Unit, the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Qatalum and Hydro, gathered at a symposium to discuss the properties, usage area and production processes of aluminium – an element being described as the metal for the future.

While presenting the overview of Qatalum, Qatar’s first premium primary aluminium smelter, which is jointly owned by Qatar Petroleum and Norway-based Norsk Hydro, Qatalum chief executive officer Tom Petter Johansen said the company would ensure continuous aluminium production to support the local construction industry.

“Since we have reached full production capacity since the end of third quarter of this year, we will be able to continue producing high quality primary aluminium products and meet our customers’ demands, which are usually based on their specifications,” he noted.

Qatalum has the ability to produce 625,000 tonnes of primary aluminium products a year from twin 1.2km potlines.

Johansen said the company, which achieved its full production capacity on September 25, had an “excellent” safety record.

The company’s workforce represents more than 34 nationalities.
