Alumina Partners of Jamaica (Alpart) is setting up a new facility in Jamaica. Jamaican Finance Minister Audley Shaw made the disclosure at a town hall that the company is expected to build second alumina refinery soon.
The new alumina plant is expected to produce 2,000 tonnes of alumina every year. He further added that this new facility would add company’s total alumina production of 3,600 tonnes per annum.

Apart from alumina refinery, Audley Shaw stated that Alpart is also planning to construct a plant that would produce aluminium foil.
This project would create thousands more employment opportunities to the Jamaicans. Around seven hundred people have already got jobs with the reopening of Alpart.

Alpart’s capacity, prior to its shut down in 2009, was 1.65 million tonnes of alumina and 4.9 million metric tonnes of bauxite that it sourced from its own mines.
In the last quarter of 2016, Russian aluminium giant Rusal completed the sale of its Alpart alumina refinery in Jamaica to JISCO for US$299 million.
