Alcoa Kwinana refinery on fire causing upto $1 million damage
There were reports of an explosion and a plume of black smoke flowed from the refinery.
Department of Fire and Emergency Services spokesman Allen Gale confirmed the blaze started a short time before midday in the cooling tower.
"Our district officer has been in touch with Alcoa," he said.
"There was a fire in the cooling tower, which they were able to extinguish very quickly themselves and did not need assistance.
"There were no other associated hazards."
An Alcoa spokeswoman said the cooling tower was undergoing planned maintenance when the fire started.
She said no one was injured and it did not appear the incident would impact production.
“An investigation is now underway and the necessary authorities have been informed,” she said.
