Alba welcomes UOB engineering students to Calciner
They were also taken to the Alba marine terminal with its two jetties where green petroleum coke and alumina are imported from different countries.
Alba's Superintendent, Calciner & Marine, Siva Prasad Rao met the UOB students who were accompanied by Prof. Ahmed Youssef Abdalla, Chairman of UOB's Department of Mechanical Engineering, and Prof. Saad Suliman, Professor of Manufacturing Systems & Processes at UOB's Department of Mechanical Engineering.
Commenting on the visit of the UOB students, Alba's Chief Executive Laurent Schmitt said:
"Alba encourages such close interaction with Bahrain's student community and values the opportunity to share our experience and expertise with them. Over the years, Alba has had a long and fruitful association with UOB's College of Engineering. We trust that this educational tour by the engineering students will have proved beneficial to their understanding of the aluminium production process, and hopefully, motivate them to consider career prospects in the aluminium industry."
Alba is one of two aluminium smelters in the world to have a dedicated petroleum coke calciner plant. Built over 140,000 sq.m of reclaimed land at the Alba marine terminal in May 2001, it produces 550,000 metric tonne per annum of calcined petroleum coke. Integral to the calciner plant is a seawater desalination plant that produces and supplies 41,000 cubic metres per day of potable water.
