During the fiscal year 2021, Alba won the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) Gold Medal Award for maintaining an excellent track record in Safety and Health, becoming the ninth time recipient of the same in a row.

Keeping the employees and the contractors’ labour force safe is of utmost importance to Alba. Among other prestigious international awards, Alba proudly showcases an International Safety Award and Merit from British Safety Council which it won in 2020. Alba remained stoic in its quest for Safety Excellence, surpassing more than 20 million safe working hours without any Lost Time Injury (LTI) by the end of 2021.
Today, Alba can be regarded as the World’s largest aluminium smelter excluding China with the production of more than 1.561 million tonnes per annum (2021) which only started with a meagre amount of 120,000 tonnes per annum production in 1971.
Alba exports to more than 240 global customers from its Standard and Value-Added product (VAP)s brochure through sales offices in Europe (Zurich), Asia (Hong Kong & Singapore) and other subsidiary offices in the US.
Alba’s shareholders are Bahrain Mumtalakat Holding Company B.S.C. © (69.38%), SABIC Industrial Investments Company (SIIC) (20.62%) and General Public (10%), thus Alba is dually listed on Bahrain Bourse and London Stock Exchange.
Bahrain’s aluminium sector accounts for 12% of the country’s GDP and Alba is at the heart of this clan. For the past five decades, it has contributed a lot to the social, industrial and economic development of the Kingdom of Bahrain.
Alba’s 3,100 strength employee pyramid consists of 84% Bahraini nationals and the model it follows can be used as an accurate specimen for Employee training and Development. It is fascinating to find out that despite being hurdled down by Covid-19, unlike other industries Alba retained its training hours in 2021.
Referring to this achievement, Alba’s Chief Executive Officer Ali Al Baqali exclaimed:
“Alba’s strong Safety culture has been nurtured over 50+ years of dedication, and by empowering our employees and contractors’ personnel at every level of the organization.
Capitalising on our motto ‘Safety First, Safety Always, Safety At All Times’, has led us to achieve to date more than 24 million safe working hours.
And going into the 10th year in a row, we aspire to raise the bar to land the RoSPA’s President Award which is presented to organisations that have achieved 10-14 consecutive Gold Awards.”
Every year nearly 2,000 participants enrol for the United Kingdom’s longest-running H&S Industry award show, RoSPA since it is of great magnitude to the companies. Winning this award comes with worldwide recognition and admiration. Like the Oscars are for films, this award certifies a company as safe and desirable. The winners are practically pioneers in the Safety and Health Standards put down by the European hierarchy.
Alba was recently crowned as a top Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) performer in Bahrain by ESG which marks its prominence in the metal industry.
Initiated back in January 2020, through Alba’s responsive strategy to contain COVID-19 following the guidelines of the Bahrain National Taskforce for Combating Coronavirus (COVID-19), the company was able to maintain safe operations throughout 2021. All credit goes to the very adjusting employees, the contractor workforce and the performing officials.
