Aluminium Bahrain B.S.C. (Alba), the largest single-site aluminium smelter, has renewed its alumina supply agreement with Hydro during the Fastmarkets International Aluminium 2025 Conference in Barcelona.
The renewed agreement plays a key role in Alba’s long-term growth strategy, ensuring reliable access to critical raw materials. Securing alumina supply is essential for maintaining Alba’s annual production capacity of over 1.62 million metric tonnes of aluminium. This partnership not only shapes Alba’s future growth strategy but also takes a step forward to align with Bahrain’s national economic diversification and sustainability goals.
Commenting on the renewal, Ali Al Baqali, the Chief Executive Officer of Alba, said, “The agreement reflects Alba’s longstanding and valued collaboration with Hydro. It reinforces a steady supply of high-quality alumina, which facilitates seamless operations while strengthening Alba’s position as a forward-looking, responsible producer.”
Hydro’s Senior Vice President, Jonathan Hadley, added: “We are delighted to extend our support for Alba through this renewed agreement. It reflects Hydro’s commitment to serve as a partner of choice for key global customers while advancing shared goals of sustainability and operational excellence.”

Agreement aligned with primary aluminium production growth in Bahrain
Alba is a key primary aluminium producer in Bahrain, which has been witnessing a consistent growth in output year-over-year. In 2024, Alba produced 1,622,261 tonnes, compared to 1,620,665 tonnes in 2023 and 1,600,111 tonnes in 2022. The consistent rise in primary aluminium production requires increased alumina. The renewal of alumina supply agreement with Hydro clearly indicates that. In addition, the company has also joined hands with Egyptalum to develop an alumina refinery in Egypt. Currently, Alba and Egypt's Metallurgical Industries Holding Company are in the feasibility study phase for a new alumina refinery to be built in Egypt.
