
In January 2023, Africa’s primary aluminium production amounted to 143,000 tonnes, continuing to increase by 3,000 tonnes or 2.14 per cent month-on-month, found the International Aluminium Institute survey. In December 2022, Africa produced 140,000 tonnes of primary aluminium, which was up by 11.11 per cent or 14,000 tonnes from 126,000 tonnes in November.

On a year-on-year calculation, Africa’s primary aluminium output recorded a rise of 6,000 tonnes or 4.38 per cent from 137,000 tonnes.
From January to December 2022, Africa churned out 1.620 million tonnes of primary aluminium, recording a rise of 1.89 per cent from 1.590 million tonnes a year ago.
In January 2023, Africa’s aluminium output increased sequentially amid a drop in the world’s primary aluminium production. The latter decreased by 0.58 per cent month-on-moth from 5.870 million tonnes to 5.836 million tonnes in January.
However, on an annual basis, the world’s primary aluminium output registered a rise of 3.33 per cent from 5.648 million tonnes.
In full year 2022, the world’s primary aluminium production totalled 68.461 million tonnes, up by 2.04 per cent from 67.092 million tonnes a year ago.
