The government of Ireland announced a new Deposit Return Scheme called ‘Re-Turn, to promote the recycling of aluminium cans and plastic bottles. Recycling aluminium requires 95 per cent of less energy as compared to making aluminium from raw materials. Additionally, it reduces greenhouse gas emissions from the basic production process by 97 per cent. The scheme will be run by Deposit Return Scheme Ireland CLG, and will charge a 15-cent deposit when a beverage is bought in an aluminium can or plastic bottle, which will be later repaid to the customer once they return the product to the shop or collection station. According to Ms O'Brien, Chief Executive of VOICE Ireland, the total recycling rate for plastic is about 30 per cent, while recycling rates for aluminium cans and plastic bottles...

Sustainability, or the urge to shift towards a greener environment, has become the need of the hour. Top companies and individuals, including the aluminium sector, are leaving no stone unturned to shift towards a greener industry. Aluminium as a metal generates around 1.1 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO₂) each year. However, by 2050, the demand for aluminium is anticipated to rise by 50% to 80%. As a result, the top producers and people are taking significant actions by adopting renewable energy and producing cutting-edge technologies. With a growing concern for the environment and an increasing emphasis on carbon neutrality, notable aluminium leaders and companies are striving to build a sustainability roadmap for the industry, while groups are taking steps to recognise their...

Awareness programme for aluminium foil recycling is being spread out even to school students in York, the United Kingdom. The walled city in northeast England has designed a competition for primary school students during Christmas to make them learn the importance of recycling aluminium foil. A little change has been brought to recycling in the city, meaning City of York Council now collects foil from residents in their kerbside collections. To promote this change, city councillors have collaborated with Alupro, not-for-profit organisation representing the UK’s aluminium packaging industry, to hold a competition for school students. For the competition, participants will have to create Christmas themed A4 posters with used and washed aluminium foil and other art supplies. The poster...

Vivarail has mastered the art of resuscitating old or retired aluminium trains to make new operational compartments but is currently facing a proprietary issue. The company has been found seeking new administrators to avoid dissolution. Vivarail had its beginnings in the 2013s when founder Adrian Shooter was handed over a large collection of former District Line cars from Transport for London with the sole purpose of refurbishing their aluminium body shells and enhancing the coaches with the latest technology like batteries. Some of these reinstated aluminium coaches are now in service at Southern Midlands, operating between Bedford and Bletchley, also along the Isle of Wight. These aluminium coaches are also being created for usual railway routes in North Wales and on the Greenford...

The release of Nokia T21 tablets has been announced by HMD Global, comprised of 100% recyclable aluminium and 60% recycled plastic. For the past few years, the company has invested sufficiently to transform its constituting materials into sustainable ones that can induce a circular economy. In December 2016, HMD Global took over the operations of the acknowledged Finnish mobile brand, Nokia and, since then, has been rigorously involved in R&D trying to incorporate sustainability agendas into the company profile. With the world moving towards Net Zero, many acknowledged companies are taking their first pledge towards sustainability. HMD wishes to keep up with the race with this particular model. The use of aluminium is ingenious as, among metals, it has a 100 per cent retrieval rate when...

The multipurpose sports and entertainment complex, Espace Mayenne in Laval, France, created by local firm Hérault Arnod architectures, is covered with a curbed, twisted shell made of textured aluminium plates. The project, situated on a former military site, is a component of a larger plan to develop property on the northwest outskirts of Laval. This plan also calls for constructing a 250-meter outdoor velodrome and landscaping a nearby swamp and forest. An aluminium shell covering the building's façade, which sits atop a foundation covered in wood and extends downhill to cover the outside wall to the west, has three horizontal bands of various textures. "This is an area undergoing change. The building's organisation respects the landscape structure and the memory of the site, combining...

Beverage makers Lo Bros taking into account the sustainability factor has launched their latest product in a new aluminium packaging option, which is 100% recyclable and eco-friendly. Not Soda will now be available in aluminium beverage cans and it has been created with the notion of discarding the application of single-use plastic packaging solutions. Australian supermarket chains like Ritchies and Drakes are eager to hold on to the brands initiative wherein they have decided to store Not Soda in their stores. The best part behind the elaborate scheme can be explained in very few words; for every can that gets sold, two plastic bottles would be extracted from the ocean bed, which in the long run might yield extraordinary results. This is a perfectly placed initiative that will lower the...

Cellnex has successfully finished the pilot programme to test and confirm the usage of cutting-edge aluminium-air battery technology as a backup power system at its locations as part of a test programme. This was done in partnership with Phinergy, one of the leading developers of clean and high-energy-density systems based on metal-air technology that has revolutionised electricity generation using aluminium as the primary energy source. Aluminium batteries offer clean energy sources and don't produce trash that must be disposed of or pollute the environment. The project involved replacing a diesel generator set with these advanced aluminium-air batteries at Ossa de Montiel, a location close to the Lagunas de Ruidera Park in the province of Albacete (Spain). The 4kW, 20-hour capacity...
