Hindalco Industries is moving to structured digital tenders for spot sales of metallurgical-grade alumina in a bid to improve transparency, broaden market participation and strengthen price discovery in the global alumina market. The company is partnering with Metalshub for the initiative through its subsidiary Utkal Alumina International. The move comes as the alumina market continues to lack the transparent, transaction-based pricing mechanism available for aluminium. Hindalco said only around 10 per cent of the 55–60 million tonnes of alumina traded globally each year in the third-party market is sold through spot transactions, even though those sales can influence benchmark prices for a much larger volume of long-term contracts. Hindalco moves alumina spot sales to digital bidding...

Panellists at the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI) 2023 Convention & Exposition (ISRI2023) Spotlight on Aluminium session discussed investments in the North American aluminium value chain and potential impacts on aluminium scrap trade between the United States and India. "Unprecedented investment was occurring. And it's remarkable to see that the aluminum industry continues to evolve, change and grow as it continues its history. The market was precariously balanced as of mid-April. That's not good news. That's not bad news. It's just where we are at this point in time," said Steve Williamson, North America research manager for London-based CRU Group. Steve Williamson also said that secondary aluminium demand peaked from 2020 until the summer of 2022. Due to limited supply,...

Being attentive to protecting the environment and limiting our impact on the planet nowadays is not only an ethical and moral matter, but it is also a value-added to be competitive in the global market. Increasingly tightened legislation and more rigorous environmental standards force the companies to be able to combine quality, price and a reduced environmental impact, especially for those who work in the global market. Foundry Ecocer, the market leader in producing and selling products and machinery for the metallurgical treatments of non-ferrous alloys, has already started a process of reducing its environmental impact a long ago, starting to use self-produced photovoltaic energy in 2008. Over the years, investments have increased to become more efficient in energy levels. There are...

Ball Corporation announced its first quarter 2023 results on a US GAAP basis, revealing sales of $3.49 billion compared to $3.72 billion during the same period last year. As a result, the company's net earnings declined significantly by 60.31 per cent from $446 million in 1QCY2022 to $177 million in 1QCY2023. Ball Corporation also reported that its comparable net earnings were $217 million or 69 cents per diluted share in 1QCY2023 compared to $252 million or 77 cents per diluted share in 1QCY2022. The year-on-year downfall in Ball’s financial results could be partly attributed to its Russian beverage packing business sell to Arnest Group . However, from the beverage packaging unit in North and Central...

Google, the world’s leader in the search engine, plans to transform the search on its platform. The new avatar of the search engine will be more “visual, snackable, personal and human”. As mentioned in a recent report by The Wall Street Journal, the technology /giant will transform how the search engine presents the data to the audience with more AI-based conversations, trim video clips and social media posts, etc. This is expected to give a better experience to the person searching for information and will make the search activities more interactive, relevant and exciting. To search, users may have multiple steps to take, but this mechanism will reduce that. This move is very relevant when ChatGPT is already transforming how people search for information. Many of those conversational...

ARCC, a technology and manufacturing brand in its seventh year, is continually advancing its future thinking regarding reimagining how a bus with zero emissions should be built. Aluminium Revolutionary Chassis Company (ARCC) has sometimes produced zero-emissions buses and coaches like other companies in the industry. ARCC personnel were heavily involved in designing and deploying its first aluminium body on a Toro electric bus for Sydney Airport and further units for Brisbane Airport in 2015. The lessons learned from these initiatives formed the basis for the concepts that ARCC's engineers and management team recognised as having the potential to alter the future of zero-emissions bus and coach manufacture in Australia. Peter Murley, the Founder and Managing Director of ARCC, said, "We...

Metallurgists and chemists are working on a less fantastical but comparable problem: recycling materials to the same grade 'A' quality they began life in. For instance, recycling steel may seem simple. Still, it isn't, and according to the German automotive manufacturer of luxury vehicles Audi, just a tiny portion of the materials removed from used automobiles, including steel, are used in new cars. Therefore, recycled steel from discarded automobiles is more likely to be used in the building and construction industry rather than being reused for body skins, chassis, suspension, or other components. The MaterialLoop project , in which Audi is a partner, explores this downgrading of materials when they are recycled, whether they be metals or plastics. It is known as "downcycling." The...
