Downstream aluminium weekly: Elvalhalcor exploring ways to use LPG instead of fossil fuel for aluminium production; Alcoa develops production ready high strength aluminium alloys

This week the downstream sector has been alive with innovative incidents where, Greek aluminium and copper producer, Elvalhalcor, was found estimating the company’s crossover to liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) from fossil fuel (natural gas) to help de-escalate its power bill. To manufacture new battery materials with a low environmental impact in Europe, Hydro, Elkem and Altor have joined hands to support Vianode with investments. Göksal Güngör will continue to be the President of the Global Aluminium Foil Roller Initiative (GLAFRI) for another term after being re-elected during the 6th Global Aluminium Foil Roller Conference (GLAFCO) in Istanbul. Alcoa is developing A210 ExtruStrongTM and C611 EZCastTM aluminium alloys to be used in the automobile and construction sectors.

Vedanta, the leading manufacturer of aluminium in India, has appointed Dilip Sinha as the new chief human resources officer (CHRO). In his new position, Sinha, who has 24 years of extensive expertise in human resource management, will oversee all aspects of HR for Vendanta's aluminium company. On September 13, Alcoa declared that it is currently developing new aluminium alloys, named A210 ExtruStrongTM and C611 EZCastTM, to further optimise its supply division and establish itself as a successful American alloy provider.

According to a partnership announced on April 6, Elkem would retain 40 per cent of Vianode while Hydro and Altor Equity Partners would each purchase 30 per cent. As per the latest reports, the acquisition has received approval from the competition authorities, in which Vianode will have considerable support to quicken the manufacture of new battery materials with a low environmental impact in Europe.

After remaining stable through the first half of 2022, operating rates of China’s molten aluminium casting billet enterprises declined in July and August, attributed to the decline in orders from downstream aluminium extruders, recurrence of the COVID-19, and power rationing in some areas. SMM survey found the average operating rates of domestic molten aluminium casting billet enterprises dropped by 3.51 percentage points M-o-M to 67.84 per cent in August 2022.

Hindalco Industries Limited has slashed its aluminium products and aluminium ingot prices, with effect from Thursday, September 15, following a rise on September 10. Hindalco’s aluminium wire rod price has been reduced by INR 4,750 per tonne or 2.17 per cent to sell the product at INR 214,600 per tonne on September 15 onwards.

UK’s superior aluminium extrusion provider, Capital Aluminium Extrusions Ltd. or Capalex in short, is planning to expand its business further with a £500,000 investment at its Cleator Moor manufacturing site. The company’s facility in West Cumbria currently has an employee list containing at least 50 names.
