Hydro is reportedly purchasing land in Torija, Spain, to construct a state-of-the-art aluminium recycling plant with an annual capacity of 12,000 tonnes. As per the report, Hydro has already signed an agreement for land purchase with a subsidiary of the Pulsar Properties Group. The facility will produce Hydro CIRCAL, an in-house brand of high-quality recycled aluminium ingot made with 75 per cent post-consumer scrap, which accounts for only 2.3 kg of CO2e/kg aluminium. Thus, it will boost Hydro's low-carbon aluminium production ability and European scrap storage. The new plant will hire about 65 direct employees. However, Hydro aims to make a final investment decision by the end of 2023, as the project is estimated to cost around EUR 130-140 million, depending on the final design, market...

Chong Zi En, a 26-year-old National University of Singapore (NUS) student, has used his design skills to create an assistive walker, Paw Wheels, for mobility-impaired senior dogs. This special device was created with the help of hollow aluminium tubes and other lightweight components. Chong was inspired by his experience caring for a senior handicapped dog during his national service at the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) Military Working Dog Unit. He found lifting the dog's weak hind legs challenging for a walk, even with a wheelchair. This encouraged him to design a low-cost, lightweight, adjustable walker that is comfortable and safe for dogs of different sizes. He researched existing mobility aids for dogs, spoke to owners of handicapped dogs, and worked with an animal physiotherapist to...

Many companies, institutes, and agencies are doing their part to promote the importance of aluminium recycling. Like, the Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi (EAD) plans to install reverse vending machines around the Emirate to increase the recycling of commodities such as aluminium and plastic. Also, the Fergus Curling Club is initiating a multi-stage fundraising drive to replace the ice machine and concrete pad. The first part of our fundraising campaign, ABC's 4 FCC, kicks off on June 21. Under this initiative, the club requested that people save their aluminium cans, bottles and other recyclable items for recycling. Aluminium can recycling holds 95 per cent of the energy necessary to produce the same quantity of aluminium from its virgin source. Stellantis, Peugeot, Citroen, and Vauxhall's...

With October 2025 being envisaged as the earliest feasible 'go live' date for the Scottish deposit return scheme (DRS), the scheme's implementation will likely be coordinated with similar ideas for other regions of the UK. Commenting on this announcement Tom Giddings, executive director of Alupro , highlighted the importance of interoperability. He said interoperability across nearby countries - for the correct scheme - is quite welcome when deploying a well-designed and high-performing DRS. Ensuring compatibility reduces burden and risk while increasing total effect, engagement, and return. "Following this week's announcement, our focus must move quickly to optimising scheme design. A variable deposit rate, to this end, is therefore non-negotiable. It supports the use of recyclable...

China's rising reliance on bauxite, the primary raw material for alumina production, has prompted the world's largest miner to seek alumina refineries worldwide, particularly emphasising crucial supplier Indonesia following an export embargo. According to analysts and AL Circle's industry-focused report Global Aluminium Industry Outlook 2023 , China's reliance on imported bauxite has reached 57 per cent, and this figure is projected to rise further. Protectionist policies of some of the bauxite-producing countries, along with the quality depletion of the bauxite reserves in China, will drive the reliance on bauxite from Guinea. As China ramps up its decarbonization efforts, the country must also maintain its enormous industries critical to its economy, including aluminium. According to...

Marks & Spencer has partnered with HANDLE, a beauty recycling company, to launch a Beauty Takeback Scheme in over 40 UK stores. This initiative permits customers to recycle any form of plastic or aluminium beauty packaging. Packaging solutions may vary from plastic or aluminium bottles and tubes to caps, pumps, and tubs. These recyclable items can be collected through any retailer when a user drops them into dedicated boxes placed in an M&S store's cosmetics segment. The programme aims to collect over two tonnes of empty beauty packaging within the first 12 months and build towards a circular system where new products and packaging are created from the materials collected. To mark the launch, M&S Sparks customers who recycle their beauty packaging through the scheme will receive 10% off...

RMIT Europe, a global university of technology, design and enterprise, has received funding of AU$434K from the EU Research Fund for Coal & Steel (RFCS) for its new research project ALCOAT. ALCOAT is a 42-month project to develop two new families of aluminium alloy coatings by recycling metal scrap destined for landfill. The outcome will be a more sustainable alternative to zinc for the galvanization of steel products. Steel is an inevitable metal for the construction sector for its mechanical properties, availability and affordability. But if left untreated, the metal is susceptible to oxidation and subsequent damages like cracking and rusting, especially in a moisture-rich environment. Here comes the role of aluminium alloy coatings to protect it from corrosion. “Scrap aluminium is...
