Impact Minerals has proposed changing its corporate name to Altrica Advanced Materials as it sharpens its focus on high-purity alumina (HPA) development. The proposed rebranding reflects the company's strategic shift towards its 80 per cent-owned Lake Hope project in Western Australia, which has become its principal priority for management attention and development capital. The name change will require shareholder approval through a special resolution at the company's annual general meeting scheduled for November 30, 2026. The proposal follows an October strategic review that established a clearer direction for the company's HPA activities while separating them from its earlier focus on precious and base metals exploration. Lake Hope remains central to HPA development strategy The Lake...

On Monday, October 31, a report from CRISIL showed a high possibility of Indian primary aluminium producers’ lower operating margin by more than 1200 basis points (bps) this financial year to 22-24 per cent, owing to decreased realisations and soaring production costs. Last fiscal year, primary aluminium producers experienced a record operating margin at a decade high of 36 per cent, backed by strong realisations for historically high global aluminium prices amid post-Covid economic recovery. This year, the operating margin is expected to downtrend to match past levels but be higher than the average of 17 per cent over FY2017-21, found CRISIL based on the analysis of three companies that account for the entire domestic capacity of 4.1 million tonnes. However, amid a dip in operating...

The Volta Aluminium Company (VALCO), a subsidiary of Kaiser Aluminium operating from Ghana, has halted its operations due to the ongoing dispute among workers for a salary bar adjusted with the dollar rate. The VALCO workers are now entitled to salaries in dollars but are paid in equation with the Ghanaian cedi currency. Since the cedi has recently lost its value compared to the dollar, the workers are hoping for reimbursement following the American currency chart. The argument the workers have put forth is straightforward and justified as most of them claim that their salaries are subsequently decreasing in value and they are not being paid what is due. Under the Integrated Aluminium Industry (IAI) in Ghana, VALCO has opened the market for intense development in both upstream and...

Mozal dates back to 1998, formed by a partnership between IDC, BHP Billiton, now South32, Mitsubishi and the Mozambican government. The operation started in late 2000 and soon after underwent expansion plans to double its capacity. As the demand for aluminium is at an optimum level to achieve a low-carbon future, metal companies are increasingly attracting investors’ interest. Last year, South32 acquired an additional 8.445 per cent share in Mozal, which increased its...

Press Metal Aluminium Holdings Bhd is estimated to mark an exponential double-digit net profit in the Financial Year 2022 (FY22). Though aluminium spot prices have declined, there is a sufficient hike in carbon anode prices which will increase operational costs. There is a projected growth of 50 per cent on a year-on-year basis (y-o-y) in FY22 for the biggest aluminium smelter in South-East Asia, even though the Hong Leong Investment Bank (HLIB) Research predicted a quarter-on-quarter (q-o-q) downfall in net profit for the third quarter of FY22 (3Q22). For the financial year 2023 (FY23), the HLIB claims that the net profit for Press Metal would have a restrained growth of 41 per cent y-o-y. Social inventories of primary aluminium across China’s eight major consumption areas, including SHFE warrants, stood at 613,000 tonnes, after being slipped by 8,000 tonnes or 1.29 per cent over the weekend from 621,000 tonnes, found the Shanghai Metals Market data. On a week-on-week calculation, the inventories fell by 13,000 tonnes from 626,000 tonnes on October 24. The continued decline in inventories could be attributed to the ongoing closure of Gongyi Railway Station as it had been hindering cargo arrivals. The chart below represents the current status of primary aluminium inventories across China in more details: According to SMM data, primary aluminium inventories in Wuxi decreased by 5,000 tonnes over this weekend ended October 31 to stand at 205,000 tonnes, followed by the...

Red mud, also known as bauxite residue, is one of the most underused industrial wastes created during the Bayer process used to process bauxite into alumina. However, with time, more than 700 red mud applications have been patented by scientists, out of which only a few have been adopted by the industry due to reasons like cost, poor public acceptability, environmental concerns, etc. One such application was recently made by the Bhopal, India-based research institute, CSIR Advanced Materials and Processes Research Institute (AMPRI). The researchers developed a method for turning red mud into X-ray shielding tiles using a ceramic process by including a certain weight proportion of high Z material and binder that is both environmentally friendly and economically feasible. Dr N. Kalaiselvi,...
