Aluminium aerosol cans are significantly less likely to be recovered during recycling operations than conventional drinks cans, according to new research by waste intelligence company Greyparrot. An AI-powered analysis of waste streams found that aluminium aerosols recorded a sorting success rate of 68 per cent, compared with 85.3 per cent for drinks cans, highlighting the challenges faced by recycling facilities in recovering non-beverage aluminium packaging. The findings were generated through Greyparrot's Deepnest platform, which analysed 1.2 billion waste items across facilities in the UK, the US and the Netherlands, including 395,424 aerosols. The results were discussed during a recent webinar involving representatives from waste management company Biffa, packaging manufacturer Ball...

The amazing outcomes of heat transfer demonstrations for aluminium coated with THERMAL-XR (TXR) driven by GMG Graphene, as compared to uncoated bare aluminium, have been provided by the Australia-based cleantech company, Graphene Manufacturing Group Ltd (GMG). The business claimed that GMG's THERMAL-XR decreases the surface temperature of aluminium by around 15 per cent at temperatures ranging from 70°C to 90°C. This claim was verified by the University of Queensland Materials Performance Consulting (UQMP). A 10-millimetre (mm) thick aluminium plate was split in two during an experiment. One half of the plate was coated with GMG's THERMAL-XR, while the other was left untreated. The undersides of the two neighbouring plates were then both heated at the same time. According to the business,...

The President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, announced on December 20, 2022, that the nation would ban bauxite exports, the primary ore source of aluminium, starting from June 2023 to boost the domestic processing of the material. Indonesia ranks among the world's largest bauxite suppliers, with China as a significant consumer. The bauxite export ban's timing complies with Indonesia's present mining regulations. During an economic forum, the Indonesian President said Indonesia would announce a ban on commodity exports without disclosing which or a timeframe for implementation. Exports of other unprocessed minerals, such as copper, are prohibited under Indonesia's current mining law. However, the President did not specify when the bans on shipments of the other materials would be implemented....

On December 20, 2022, the disruptive technology driver in the world of aluminium scrap sorting and recycling, Sortera Alloys, Inc., announced that it had achieved high-quality sorting of pre-production aluminium with more than 95 per cent accuracy. These findings demonstrate that Sortera's advanced deep-technology platform, which includes a vision and other advanced hardware sensors and is powered by a software stack that includes machine learning and artificial intelligence, can handle complex sorting effectively and efficiently, specifically processing end-of-life mixed alloys by category and chemical composition. This enables the business to recycle these resources into the supply chain without compromising their integrity or compound makeup, supporting North America's circular economy...

The Aluminium Stewardship Initiative is an organisation responsible for evaluating the operational standards of a company before providing proper certifications so that a firm can get ready for global validation. The Certification Programme has evolved through an extensive multi-stakeholder consultation process and is by far the only voluntary sustainability standard initiative for the aluminium value chain. ASI Performance Standard certifications focus on 'material stewardship', addressing issues such as product design, life cycle assessment, management of processed scrap and collection and recycling of products at the end-of-life. Once a company is registered under the ASI protocol, it can be considered a globally acceptable brand for safe aluminium transportation, storage or...

Aluminium is benefitting a lot these days from innovations brought in by eminent institutions across the globe. Some innovations have evolved the production processes of the metal, while others have advanced the technologies used in the processes. Here in this article, we have picked five institutions that have treated the global aluminium value chain to one-of-a-kind technologies and applications. EU’s Reveal Research Project works on heat-based energy storage in aluminium The Reveal Research Project involving nine participants from seven European countries has initiated the noble objective of producing aluminium from alumina in a way that emits the least amount of carbon dioxide. The project magnifies a vital idea if aluminium can hold electricity as heat that can be released later to...

The Board of the Russian aluminium giant and one of the world’s leading aluminium producers, Rusal, has approved the updated climate strategy until 2032 with a perspective up to 2050. The updated climate strategy was adopted at the Rusal Board of Directors meeting in Krasnoyarsk. The Strategy is divided into two scenarios: basic and intensive, each of which defines a strict framework for achieving the company's decarbonization goals. Rusal plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions intensity per tonne of metal from all production facilities (Scope 1, Scope 2 - direct and indirect energy emissions) by at least 25 per cent by 2032 and by at least 47 per cent by 2050, compared to 2018, excluding the effect from carbon emissions neutralization projects. This reduction is in line with the most...

The Architectural Aluminium Ltd., a construction company that erected extensive cladding on many well-known industrial and commercial structures, including Terminal 2 at Dublin Airport, has been appointed joint provisional liquidators by the High Court. The construction company based in Dublin's Western Business Park had gone bankrupt after registering losses of almost €988,000 up to October. By the end of the next month, more losses of about €1.6 million are anticipated, and the total amount owed to creditors is already €5.2 million. It has 133 employees. To protect the company's assets, particularly the items it had stored on several sites in Dublin, Kilkenny, and Carlow, the firm's directors petitioned the court on Friday to appoint a provisional liquidator. The petition claimed that...

United Arab Emirates' (UAE) Lunar Rover 'Rashid' is set to conquer the moon's surface after the scheduled landing in April 2023. This is the very first lunar rover that the Arabs have successfully launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on December 11. Rashid weighs only 10 kg due to the use of extremely lightweight aluminium and carbon fibre for its composition. UAE's Lunar Rover has been thrust into space with the help of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, and it rides on Hakuto-R, a Japanese Lunar lander specially crafted for such purposes by the robotic exploration company ispace. If the mission is successful, Rashid will be the first commercial spacecraft to achieve a controlled landing on the moon's surface. The Lunar Rover weighs just 10 kg due to its exceptional aluminium, magnesium alloy...
