$5 million renovation ultimately results in closure of the aluminum bridge
Minister of Transportation and Municipal Affairs, Sylvain Gaudreault, made the announcement yesterday, a week after one of the lanes on the bridge was closed after ripping the concrete deck.
The work of art is unique in Canada remain all-aluminum, the ministry has rejected the idea to develop a steel deck. The concrete slab will be replaced along its entire length of 153 m, but will be expanded to 300 millimeters to allow the installation of rails. These aluminum rails come from the United States because no Canadian manufacturer complies with the standards, said Donald Turgeon, Regional Director of MTQ.
Insulation work materials will be made to avoid contact of the concrete with aluminum, this in order to avoid chemical reactions that alter the gray metal. Some aluminum parts will be replaced while Saguenay invest $ 300,000 in the installation of a lighting system.
The world's first aluminum Gaudreault announced that the MTQ uses Quebec Centre for Research for the development of aluminum and its president, Bernard Angers, to achieve a technology internationally to develop expertise in this type of structures.
From his part, Mr. Angers said he was pleased that the minister opens the door to collaboration with the Ministry especially since it is already a focal point and transfer of expertise this long. "We piloted a project to empower aluminum in bridge structures. Previously, aluminum was not likely to be built under the National Code of bridges. We did change the national code. This is a relatively pristine since there is little expertise. We must find and succeed, "said Angers.
President Jonquière, Réjean Laforest, said the technical committee and policy where he worked with his colleague Carl Dufour quickly ruled it was necessary to preserve the uniqueness of the structure using the material of origin.
