The Indian mines and minerals sector is a vital pillar of the country’s economic and industrial development. Policy initiatives such as auction-based allocation of mineral blocks, commercial coal mining, and the promotion of exploration through public–private partnerships have reshaped the sector’s regulatory framework. Increased focus is also being placed on the development of critical and strategic minerals to reduce import dependence and strengthen mineral security.

Despite its potential, the Indian mines and minerals sector faces challenges such as exploration risks, regulatory complexity, environmental concerns, and infrastructure constraints. Addressing these challenges through policy stability, innovation, skill development, and stakeholder collaboration is essential. With continued reforms, responsible mining practices, and technological innovation, the sector is well positioned to contribute to sustainable and inclusive national development.
