Case Study: How is the electrical & electronics sector shaping aluminium casting consumption?

The global electrical and electronics sector is entering an unprecedented phase of growth, driven by electrification, renewable energy deployment, digitalisation, artificial intelligence (AI) and expanding data centre infrastructure. As investment accelerates across power systems, data centres, electronic equipment and energy storage, aluminium castings are gaining importance across an increasingly broad range of applications.

The impact is already visible in consumption trends. According to AL Circle’s latest report, “Global Aluminium Casting Market 2026-2032”, the global aluminium casting consumption demand from the electrical and electronics sector is projected to rise from 0.73 million tonnes in 2025 to 0.77 million tonnes in 2026, before reaching 1.03 million tonnes by 2030 and 1.14 million tonnes by 2032. This represents an increase of nearly 56% between 2025 and 2032.

The market shift: Electrification is creating new demand

One of the strongest drivers of future aluminium casting demand globally is the worldwide transition towards electrification. Utilities are investing heavily in electricity generation, transmission and distribution infrastructure to accommodate rising electricity consumption. 

In China, the State Grid Corporation plans to invest approximately RMB 4 trillion (USD 553 billion) in fixed assets during 2026-2030, a significant increase compared with its previous planning cycle. A substantial share of this investment is expected to support ultra-high-voltage transmission networks and grid modernisation.

Renewable energy is adding another layer of demand. China plans to install approximately 255 GW of solar capacity in selected regions between 2025 and 2030, while India is targeting 500 GW of non-fossil fuel generation capacity by 2030. Australia is also pursuing a major renewable energy transition.

This expansion requires transformers, transmission equipment, substations, power electronics, cooling systems and other electrical infrastructure, creating additional opportunities for aluminium cast components.

The data centre effect: AI is changing electricity demand

The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing is creating another significant demand channel.

Data centres are becoming some of the largest sources of incremental electricity consumption. China’s data centre electricity consumption is estimated to reach between 100 and 200 TWh by 2025 and is expected to increase significantly through 2030. Japan, meanwhile, is expected to see third-party data centre capacity grow by approximately 10% annually between 2024 and 2030.

As data centre infrastructure expands, demand rises for aluminium-intensive equipment, including power distribution systems, transformers, backup power systems, cooling infrastructure and advanced electronic systems. The data centre pipeline in Victoria, Australia, also illustrates this momentum, with new capacity expected to continue expanding through 2031.

Why aluminium castings matter

Aluminium’s combination of lightweight properties, corrosion resistance, thermal conductivity and durability makes it suitable for a wide range of electrical and electronic applications.

Castings are increasingly used in transformer housings, switchgear enclosures, electrical motors, power transmission equipment, battery storage systems, inverter casings, cooling systems, telecommunications infrastructure, data centre equipment and renewable energy hardware.

The sector is therefore creating demand not simply for higher aluminium volumes, but for components capable of supporting increasingly complex electrical and thermal management requirements.

The broader infrastructure opportunity

The growth extends beyond electrical equipment and data centres. North America is expected to invest approximately USD 1.4 trillion between 2026 and 2030 to strengthen grid resilience, expand transmission capacity and accommodate growing power consumption. 

Europe is also undertaking substantial grid investments, with approximately EUR 1.2 trillion estimated to be required by 2040 to integrate renewable energy capacity and modernise electricity infrastructure. Emerging markets are following a similar trajectory, with investments in transmission, distribution, energy storage and renewable energy infrastructure expected to increase.

At the same time, aluminium casting demand is supported by the building and construction sector, where castings are used across elevators, HVAC equipment, electrical components, building systems and other infrastructure.

Looking ahead: A structural growth avenue for aluminium castings

The electrical and electronics sector is evolving into a major end-use market for aluminium castings. From grid expansion and renewable energy systems to AI-driven data centres and advanced electronic equipment, multiple growth engines are converging to support consumption.

As per AL Circle’s latest report “Global Aluminium Casting Market 2026-2032”, the global aluminium casting demand from the sector is projected to reach 1.14 million tonnes by 2032 and the opportunity for casting manufacturers lies in aligning production capabilities with the increasingly specialised requirements of electrification, power infrastructure and digital technologies.
