For years, the maritime industry viewed aluminium and steel as competitors. Aluminium offered the advantage of lightweight construction, while steel delivered unmatched strength. Choosing one often meant compromising on the other. But, today, that thinking is changing.

The recent delivery of Dory 2, Austal Vietnam’s first aluminium-steel hybrid ferry, signals more than a manufacturing milestone. It reflects a growing shift in modern shipbuilding, where aluminium is no longer expected to replace steel but to complement it in ways that maximise vessel performance. 

Why does aluminium still matter in a steel vessel?

At first glance, calling a vessel “hybrid” may seem like a simple combination of two metals. In reality, it’s a carefully engineered decision.

While steel forms the hull to withstand demanding marine conditions, aluminium is used for the superstructure where reducing weight delivers the greatest benefit. A lighter upper deck improves stability, lowers fuel consumption and allows operators to carry more passengers or cargo without increasing the vessel’s overall weight.

In other words, aluminium isn’t just making the vessel lighter; it is making the entire design smarter.

The rise of multi-material shipbuilding

The maritime sector is under increasing pressure to improve fuel efficiency and reduce operational costs while meeting evolving sustainability goals.

Rather than relying on a single material, shipbuilders are beginning to select materials based on where they perform best. This design philosophy is driving the adoption of multi-material vessels, where steel provides structural resilience and aluminium contributes to efficiency, corrosion resistance and design flexibility.

Austal Vietnam’s latest project is a reflection of this transition, expanding beyond its traditional aluminium vessel expertise into a new generation of hybrid construction. 

Aluminium’s course in modern shipbuilding

Aluminium’s role in shipbuilding has quietly evolved over the years. It is no longer confined to high-speed ferries or specialised marine applications. Instead, it is becoming an indispensable material in vessels designed to balance performance, durability and efficiency.

Sometimes, innovation isn’t about choosing one material over another. It’s about knowing where each creates the greatest impact and aluminium continues to prove why it deserves a place in the future of maritime engineering.
