Extract from the Alumina Technology Roadmap (Update, 2011), we take our lead:
To develop the technologies required for
•Refineries being self sufficient in water usage, with low or no impact on local water supply
•Minimizing discharges (water, dusts, alkali, VOCs, metals); No perceived impact on environment
•Improving refinery energy efficiency, alternative energy sources, carbon capture;
•Reducing impact of scale on refinery operations for better efficiency and lower costs
•Increasing liquor productivity, reducing energy and capital expenditure
•Greater flexibility in treating a range of bauxite ores, particularly low grade
•Improving alumina quality for high quality aluminum metal
