Introduction

The specific consumption of bauxite in the Indian Alumina refineries are
ranges between 2.6 to 3.2 t/t.

This is comparable to the consumption of most of the alumina refineries
except for those in Western Australia, which processes low available alumina
bauxites.

Indian bauxites have very low organic content, which enables easy
processing and possible high liquor productivity.

However a big anomaly for the Indian refineries is that in spite of the
abundance of bauxite in the country, all of the existing refineries except for
Nalco & Utkal are starved for bauxite and are required to process different
variety of bauxites.

Because of the above anomaly on the supply side, the Indian refineries pay
landed cost of bauxite in the range of US $ 10-60 per ton.
