
According to the International Aluminium Institute (IAI), total primary aluminium production in July 2022 was 5.889 million tonnes, which dropped by 28,000 tonnes or 0.47 per cent to officially close at 5.861 million in July 2023.
On a global scale, the annual primary aluminium production in 2021 was 67.092 million tonnes, which on the other hand, increased by 1.369 million tonnes or 2.4 per cent to settle at 68.461 million tonnes in 2022.

Among the largest primary aluminium-producing regions, Russia and Eastern Europe contributed almost 4.139 million tonnes of primary aluminium in 2021, falling by 58,000 tonnes or 1.4 per cent to anchor at 4.081 million tonnes in 2022. In Q1 2022, the total primary aluminium production was 1.013 million tonnes, which plunged by 16,000 tonnes or 1.58 per cent to close at 997,000 tonnes in Q1 2023.
In June 2023, Russia and Eastern Europe’s primary aluminium production was 327,000 tonnes, which escalated Month-on-Month by 10,000 tonnes or 3.06 per cent to stop at 337,000 tonnes in July 2023. While in April 2023, the total haul was 329,000 tonnes, which also rose on a Quarter-on-Quarter basis to clock at 337,000 tonnes in July. If we consider the collection of July 2022, we can see a Year-on-Year decrease of 13,000 tonnes or 3.71 per cent from 350,000 tonnes to what it is today.
The Western and Central European front has experienced a massive drop of 416,000 tonnes or 12.5 per cent from the annual primary aluminium production in 2021, which was 3.329 million tonnes. In 2022, the total production added to be 2.913 million tonnes. In Q1 2022, the total aluminium produced in Western and Central Europe was 745,000 tonnes, which shed 76,000 tonnes or 10.2 per cent to close at 669,000 tonnes in Q1 2023.
In June 2023, the total primary aluminium production was 223,000 tonnes, which spiked by 7,000 tonnes or 3.14 per cent Month-on-Month to reach 230,000 tonnes in July 2023. In April 2023, the total accumulation was 224,000 tonnes, which increased on a Quarter-on-Quarter scale by 6,000 tonnes or 2.68 per cent to close at July 2023’s 230,000 tonnes. In July 2022, the total primary aluminium production in Western and Central Europe was 252,000 tonnes, down 22,000 tonnes or 8.7 per cent, if we consider a Year-on-Year scenario.
Oceania’s annual primary aluminium production in 2021 was 1.888 million tonnes, which dived by 45,000 tonnes or 2.38 per cent to 1.843 million tonnes in 2022. In Q1 2022, the primary aluminium produced was 463,000 tonnes, which was the same in Q1 2023.
