Humanity's progress during the last century was accompanied by a massive expansion of natural resource extraction. With each passing decade, environmental issues have only become more serious, from climate change to mineral exploration to marine pollution to extinction of flora and fauna.

The United Nations General Assembly declared 5th June as World Environment Day for the first time in 1972, and since then it has been celebrated annually as World Environment Day around the world. The Stockholm Conference of 1972 turns 50 in 2022.

Over the years, World Environment Day has grown into a global platform for people and organizations from all spheres to spread awareness about environmental protection. AlCircle.com, the one-stop information and knowledge provider on the aluminium ecosystem, pledges to mankind to 'Make The Planet Green.' World environment day is celebrated each year according to a specific theme or slogan that addresses the most important environmental concern of the year. Each year a different country hosts the event.

Aluminium is environmentally friendly for a number of reasons

The metal aluminium is called green metal because of its environmental friendliness and sustainability. Aluminium is the most recyclable industrial material and can be recycled infinitely. By recycling aluminium, 95% of the energy that would have been used in its traditional way of production can be saved.

Recycling aluminium not only reduces its environmental impact, but the metal's properties often make it possible to replace more environmentally harmful materials. The amount of deforestation is reduced by 74% when aluminium is used instead of wood during residential property construction. Moreover, aluminium has a lower maintenance cost than wood.

Aluminium's high strength to weight ratio makes it a vital structural material allowing increased payloads or fuel savings, especially in the transport sector. 90% of the aluminium can be recycled at the end of a vehicle's life. Aluminium is likewise utilized in aeroplanes, bicycles, boats and ships, and to create the rims of vehicles.

The bottled water industry is intensifying efforts to replace plastic bottles with more easily recycled aluminium containers or cans as plastic water bottles are severely polluting the world’s oceans.

As the world strives for a more energy-efficient future, aluminium pursues to provide innovative solutions and competitive advantages for businesses and consumers. As reported by the IAI, “While the industry works to reduce its emissions by about 80%, demand for aluminium products is also predicted to grow. Over the coming decades, global demand for primary aluminium will increase by up to 40% and recycled aluminium from post-consumer scrap will more than triple through to 2050, as economies grow, urbanise, and build up their infrastructure.”
