Aluminium Industry Recap 2019

{alcircleadd}

To start with, EGA’s first bauxite project in Guinea, Rio Tinto’s commissioning of Amrun bauxite mine and, the beginning of mining and screening operations at Australian Bauxite Limited’s Bald Hill mine was some of the notable developments in the upstream sector, resulting in an increase in bauxite production all over the globe. But due to the surplus production, the global price of the ore remained sluggish, which on the other hand, helped in boosting China’s bauxite imports. China in the first half of the year imported 56.63 million tonnes of bauxite, up 39.26 per cent YoY, and in the second half till November 29.48 million tonnes.

Alumina market, on the other hand, recovered from the price volatility, which was driven by 50% capacity cuts in Alunorte alumina refinery, workers strikes in Alcoa refineries and sanctions against Rusal. Australian alumina FOB price, which shot up to US$ 710 per tonne in April 2018, plunged to the lowest at US$ 278.50 per tonne by the end of 2019. The average LME aluminium price that started the year with US$1,970 per tonne also gradually declined to US$ 1,771 per tonne by the year end. The downstream sector was marked by continuous expansions around the world, driven by the production of light weight vehicles and switch to aluminium cans from plastic.

These phenomenal incidents in the aluminium industry simply could not stop us from taking a quick look back to the year 2019.
