The Dak Nong aluminium smelter project in Vietnam, a 450,000-tonnes-per-year facility being developed by NFC and regarded as the country's first aluminium smelter, has achieved its first successful power delivery, marking a major construction milestone as it moves closer to trial operations and production.
{alcircleadd}According to the company, the successful energisation of the facility's electrical systems will enable the project team to move ahead with equipment testing, commissioning activities and pilot production.
The development faced several challenges during construction. With Vietnam lacking established industrial standards for electrolytic aluminium production, the project team had to address technical differences and develop solutions in close cooperation with the owner, Tran Hong Quan Metallurgy Co. Ltd. (THQ).

NFC said its engineers worked closely with THQ across a range of activities, including power system design, equipment installation and integrated system testing.
Drawing on experience from aluminium smelter projects in other countries, the NFC team held a series of technical discussions with the project owner to align engineering specifications and finalise the power-up plan.
The first power delivery was completed successfully on the initial attempt, reflecting the close cooperation between both teams throughout the construction process, the company said.
NFC described the milestone as an important step forward and said work will now focus on completing the remaining stages of commissioning and preparing the facility for future operations.
The company added that it hopes the project will become a model for industrial cooperation between China and Vietnam.
