EDITED BY : 4MINS READ

Regardless of the industry, an efficient and advanced logistics network is essential for seamless transportation. Recognising this, Vedanta Aluminium, India's largest aluminium producer, has developed a sophisticated logistics infrastructure that facilitated the movement of over 55 million tonnes of cargo in the financial year 2025. With operations focused primarily in Odisha, Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh, the company's logistics network exemplifies significant scale, operational accuracy and a strong emphasis on sustainability.

Vedanta Aluminium is driving one of the country's most advanced and high-capacity logistics networks, having transported over 55 million tonnes of raw materials and finished aluminium products in FY2025. To put this in perspective, Indian Railways handled around 1,617 million tonnes of freight during the same period. The firm's share represents nearly 4 per cent of that volume, marking a remarkable achievement for a private-sector entity.

The firm's advanced network facilitates the movement of alumina from the captive refinery in Lanjigarh, coal from adjacent mines and premium aluminium products destined for both domestic and international markets. Moreover, it maintains a presence at nearly every major Indian port. It holds the distinction of being the largest container cargo exporter from Paradip Port, one of the nation's busiest ports.

As one of India's top exporters, the company ships to over 100 destinations across six continents, reinforcing India's strategic goal to emerge as a global manufacturing and trade hub under the 'Make in India' initiative.

By focusing on this, Rajiv Kumar, the CEO of Vedanta Aluminium, stated, "At Vedanta Aluminium, logistics is a strategic enabler of our industrial leadership, sustainability goals, and nation-building mission. With an environment-first approach, we have built one of India's most advanced and future-ready logistics systems that handles more than 55 million tonnes of cargo, with plans to scale up to 80 million tonnes. As India strides towards becoming a Viksit Bharat, efficient and sustainable industrial supply chains will be pivotal. Our efforts are aligned with the PM's Gati Shakti Project, as we aim to create a digitally integrated, multi-modal transport and logistics network that enhances connectivity, reduces costs, and improves efficiency across sectors. Vedanta Aluminium is setting a new benchmark, showcasing how Indian industry can grow responsibly, inclusively, and globally."

Beyond its scale, the company's logistics system is distinguished by its environment-first approach. Prioritising rail-based transportation, the aluminium manufacturer has substantially reduced its environmental impact.

By shifting cargo movement from trucks to rail, the aluminium manufacturer lowers emissions, cuts diesel consumption and eases road congestion. Currently operating over 40 dedicated rakes, the company plans to expand this fleet to more than 50 to enhance raw material transport efficiency further. Additionally, the company is among the largest freight customers of Indian Railways' East Coast Zone, underlying its strong commitment to a rail-centric logistics strategy.

Deepak Gulati, the Chief Supply Chain Officer of Vedanta Aluminium, stated, "At Vedanta Aluminium, railways form the backbone of our logistics operations, supported by a fleet of over 40 dedicated rakes for raw material movement. We are proud to be the largest customer of CONCOR (Container Corporation of India), partnering with them to streamline our export logistics. With plans to scale operations, we continue to invest in digitalisation and sustainability at the core of our logistics ecosystem."

For internal material handling, the company operates India's largest fleet of lithium-ion electric forklifts, totalling 75 units. These forklifts, equipped with advanced safety features and real-time monitoring, contribute to creating a safer, cleaner and more efficient work environment.

Expanding its commitment beyond environmental sustainability, the firm recently launched India's first all-women locomotive team. This team operates and maintains locomotives, managing essential material movement across the facility and challenging conventional gender roles in heavy industry.

Vedanta has made significant strides in digitalising its supply chain by deploying a digital control tower and vehicle tracking systems. These advancements create a resilient, future-ready logistics framework that integrates environmental, social and governance (ESG) principles with cutting-edge digital technology.

While the firm's finished products serve industries worldwide, its logistics network drives rural economies and supports local livelihoods. By creating thousands of jobs in transportation, warehousing, maintenance and related services, the company's supply chain fosters inclusive growth in India's hinterlands. The company also makes substantial contributions through taxes and infrastructure investments, reinforcing its position as a vital yet understated pillar of India's economic progress.
