India’s largest aluminium producer, Vedanta Aluminium, is taking inclusivity to the next level by welcoming seven specially-abled professionals in its Jharsuguda mega aluminium plant. With this, the firm achieves another milestone towards diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI). Not only this, but also the firm opens its dedication towards creating meaningful job opportunities while upholding the values of equal opportunity, accessibility and workplace dignity.
{alcircleadd}The seven newly joined professionals facing various motor, visual, and speech-related challenges were handed the offer letters by Kiran Bedi, the renowned civil servant and the former Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry. The handing out of offers took place during Bedi’s visit to the operations at Jharsuguda, the largest aluminium plant in the world.
The new hires come from a wide range of educational backgrounds, from diploma holders to graduates and have been assigned roles at the plant, including Shift Coordinator, Junior Assistant, Storekeeper and Supervisor, all aligned with their academic and professional experiences.
C Chandru, the CEO of Vedanta Jharsuguda, stated, "We believe that inclusion is not just about fulfilling a social responsibility, but is also a key source of strength for an organisation as it promotes better organisational perspectives and decision-making. This initiative reflects our commitment to creating a workplace where every individual is respected, empowered and given the opportunity to grow with dignity."
On this, Pankaj Sureka, the CHRO of Vedanta Jharsuguda, added, "Inclusive hiring is a core aspect of our people practice. This initiative reflects our commitment to ensuring equal opportunities for all professionals, supported by accessible infrastructure, progressive policies and a culture that values the contribution of every team member."
Somyarani Dash, the Shift Coordinator, also commented, "Being given this opportunity has been life‑changing. This is not just about employment, it is about respect, confidence and a sense of belonging. The support, training and encouragement we receive here make me look forward to contributing my best efforts to the success of the organisation."

Upon joining, all seven professionals will be provided with a thorough safety training program, followed by personalised sessions and hands-on experience tailored to their specific job roles.
With the continuous dedicated support of Sangita Meher, the District Employment Officer (DEO), whose partnership was essential in opening up employment opportunities for specially-abled professionals, this hiring was significantly possible. To create a safe, smooth and respectful workplace, the Indian aluminium firm has also made important upgrades to infrastructure and accessibility at the various deployment sites.
These initiatives are made in a way that aids the movement to be easier, fosters effective integration within the workplace and also maintains high productivity. Looking more into the firm's initiative for diversity, in the last year, the firm welcomed fifteen transgender employees into various roles in security and housekeeping. This marks a significant step towards promoting representation and inclusion at work.
