India’s largest aluminium producer, Vedanta Aluminium, took initiatives of installing solar-powered borewells with advanced purification systems across villages in Odisha. The company reinforces its commitment to community well-being through its Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) programme across the villages of Odisha’s Kalahandi and Rayagada.
{alcircleadd}To strengthen community ownership and ensure long-term sustainability, the Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) have accepted the handover of the newly commissioned systems. Community members were also trained on proper operation and maintenance of the systems in the presence of local Sarpanches (heads of the villages) and PRI representatives.

Each borewell operates on a 1.5 kW solar power unit connected to a 1 HP submersible pump (a device with a hermetically sealed motor, designed to entirely submerge in liquid), enabling the extraction of water from deep aquifers typically located 200 meters or more below the surface, involves utilizing advanced drilling, pumping, and monitoring technologies to ensure a reliable, sustainable, and continuous flow.
The purification units are equipped with TSRF (Tata Swach Release Formula) nanotechnology, which uses nano-silver-infused, rice-husk (the dry outer coating of rice grains) derived filtration media to eliminate harmful microorganisms. A multi-layer micro-mesh filtration system removes suspended impurities, and a gravity-based purification process enhances efficiency with minimal power dependence.

Each installation has a purification capacity of up to 500 litres per hour and includes a dedicated storage facility for drinking water. To ensure long-term performance and maintenance support, the systems are covered by defined equipment warranties.
“At Vedanta Aluminium, our community efforts are closely aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),” stated Rajiv Kumar, CEO of the company. He also explained their focus on SDG 6, and plans to enhance access to safe drinking water, including aims to create healthier and resilient communities with improved sanitation infrastructure in the regions.
The areas that are put in this development scheme are Chulbadi, Singer, Dhamanghati, Dumerpadar, Sagabari, Ladakhaman and Siadimal with a total number of 3000 locals.

The sarpanch of the Sunger Gram, Gunasingh Majhi, said, “These solar-powered water facilities address longstanding concerns around water quality and availability, particularly ahead of the summer months.”
With high iron content in the groundwater in these regions (frequently ranging from 0.3 to 7.7 mg per litre), this initiative is critically needed to be implemented and acts as a meaningful step towards improving local health, hygiene and overall well-being.
