Vedanta Aluminium has stepped up its rural development efforts in Odisha with the installation of more than 700 solar-powered streetlights and over 25 solar-powered borewells, bringing improved access to lighting and drinking water to remote communities across the state.

The company said the projects have been rolled out in the districts of Kalahandi, Rayagada, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda and Koraput, benefiting more than 20,000 people. The initiative is aimed at addressing two long-standing challenges in many villages: irregular electricity supply and limited access to safe drinking water.

In several remote areas, frequent power cuts and inadequate infrastructure affect the operation of basic public services. Water pumps, in particular, often become unusable during outages, disrupting the supply of drinking water. Vedanta said its decentralised solar-powered systems have been designed to work independently of the grid, helping communities maintain access to essential services even when conventional electricity is unavailable.

The solar-powered streetlights have been installed in village roads and public spaces to improve visibility after sunset, while the borewells provide a local source of water without relying on an unstable power supply.

"For years, our villages struggled with safe drinking water and basic lighting. Women had to walk long distances, and after sunset, movement became unsafe. Today, with solar borewells and streetlights, daily life has changed. Water is available closer to our homes, and the streets remain lit at night. It has improved safety and brought real relief to our community," said Gunasingh Majhi, Sarpanch of Sunger Gram Panchayat in Rayagada district.

For many residents, especially women, the biggest change has been the reduction in time spent collecting water. In areas where nearby water sources were unavailable or unreliable, families often had to make several trips each day to meet their household needs.

Vedanta Aluminium said the programme forms part of its wider sustainability and community outreach efforts, combining renewable energy with local infrastructure development. Rather than large-scale installations, the company has focused on smaller, village-level projects that directly address everyday challenges faced by local residents.
