EDITED BY : 2MINS READ

Vedanta Aluminium, a key player in India’s metal and resource sector, has expanded the installed capacity of its Primary Foundry Alloy (PFA) unit by 120 kilo tonnes per annum (KTPA) at its Special Economic Zone (SEZ) facility in Jharsuguda, Odisha. This move aims to strengthen India’s position in the global automotive and engineering aluminium markets.

Primary Foundry Alloys are critical for manufacturing essential automotive components such as alloy wheels, engine blocks, cylinder heads, and transmission housings. Known for their superior castability, strength, and thermal conductivity, PFAs are tailored to meet stringent fuel efficiency and emissions standards.

Vedanta’s offerings comply with global benchmarks including BS-VI and CAFE norms, making them a preferred choice for global automakers.

Vedanta Aluminium CEO Rajiv Kumar said, “The expansion of our Primary Foundry Alloy capacity is a significant milestone in our journey to enhance value for our customers and position India as a global hub for advanced aluminium solutions, strengthening the Aatmanirbhar Bharat mission. It is a strategic move that strengthens our ability to serve evolving industry needs with unmatched quality and reliability”.

The timing of this expansion is strategic. While the global PFA market has grown at a 5.8 per cent CAGR, India is accelerating faster at 6.5 per cent annually, with projections indicating a 7 per cent CAGR in the next five years riven by EV adoption, lightweighting trends, and government policies like Make in India and the PLI scheme.

Vedanta Aluminium COO Sunil Gupta stated, As we broaden our portfolio of value-added products, we are not only supporting the shift towards lightweight, fuel-efficient vehicles but also contributing to the growth of indigenous manufacturing and reducing India’s reliance on imports.”

The Jharsuguda facility has been equipped with advanced technology sourced from Befesa, Spain, including in-line metal treatment systems, degassing units, and vertical chill casting lines. This ensures high precision and consistent quality, helping Vedanta Aluminium meet growing global demand, including in Europe, North America, and Asia.

Sustainability is at the core of Vedanta’s strategy. The company’s PFA product line is covered under the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) Chain of Custody certification alongside its billets, wire rods, and low-carbon aluminium products like Restora and Restora Ultra ensuring traceability, ethical sourcing, and a reduced carbon footprint.
