According to USGS’ recently published bauxite and alumina industry survey for the Third Quarter 2016, imports of crude and dried bauxite by USA in the third quarter of 2016 were 1.14 million tons (Mt). This records a 20% drop from those in the second quarter of 2016 and 61% drop from the third quarter of 2015.
Jamaica and Brazil were the key exporters of crude and dried bauxite to the U.S. during Q3 2016 accounting for 67% and 32% of export respectively. Imports from Jamaica in Q3 were 27% less than those in Q2. The drop was attributed to the shutdown of Sherwin Alumina Co. LLC’s 1.65-million-metric-ton-per-year (Mt/yr) alumina refinery in Gregory, TX, on September 30. Sherwin Alumina, which had been operating under Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection since January, sourced its bauxite from Jamaica and they closed down citing a dispute with its supplier, Noranda Aluminum Holding Corp., as the reason for the closure.

General drop in bauxite import was also due to continuous primary aluminium capacity closure in USA year on year and a resulting drop in bauxite demand. Noranda Aluminum Holding Corp. also closed its primary aluminium smelter in New Madrid. An electrical failure shut down two-thirds of the 263,000-metricton-per-year smelter’s capacity in January and the remaining capacity was shut down in March.
